Frisco Rumor Mill

The latest whispers and speculations about exciting local developments, from potential new biz openings to upcoming community projects and events everyone is talking about. Have a scoop or thoughts about the headlines below? Send us a note.

  • The ACM Awards announced the first 3 artists set to perform at the May 8th event in Frisco: Blake Shelton, Eric Church, and Lainey Wilson are coming to town! They’ll bring Reba and some other friends with them too. More performers are expected to be announced in the next couple of weeks.

  • Did you see the dirt moving at The Mix (formerly known as Wade Park)? It's like watching a long-awaited sequel to a movie that left us all on a cliffhanger—except this time, active excavators and bulldozers are tooling around making progress!

  • The funding needed to kick off a massive new expansion at McKinney National Airport has been officially secured. If everything goes according to plan, McKinney will be home to the third commercial airport in the metroplex.

  • We’ve heard some strong Frisco feelings lately as residents prepare to vote for or against the proposed Frisco Center for the Arts Project. The campaign signs say “It costs you nothing” and tout the long-term benefits to the destination city of Frisco. Others (who are inclined to vote no), say nothing is free and they have serious concerns about the proposed bond funding of $160,000,000, in addition to the private funds promised that are not yet secure - allegedly putting taxpayers at risk. There are numerous perspectives you can explore to learn more and form your own opinion before voting. Among the more vocal contributors to the conversation include longtime City Manager George Purefoy (retired), former City Councilwoman and future candidate for Mayor Shona Sowell, and current Councilman Brian Livingston for the “we’re very concerned and will vote no” side of the equation. On the “this is very good for Frisco” side, Mayor Jeff Cheney and City Councilwoman Tammy Meinershagen (among others) have worked hard on this passion project for a long time. What do you think? Submit a letter to the editor and we’ll publish the responses in a future edition of Frisco FYI (anonymously, unless you tell us otherwise.)

Sports Spotlight

FC Dallas is Hosting a Night Inspired by the Movies. Cue the dramatic music and get your popcorn ready as Toyota Stadium transforms into a cinematic spectacle on March 29th. Guests are invited to stay seated after the final whistle for the first drone show of the season when the sky becomes illuminated with beloved movie moments set to iconic film scores. Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra will perform PLUS if you arrive early, you can catch red carpet-style fan activations, including photo ops, and movie-themed entertainment.

🏀 Or, if March Madness has you bananas for basketball right now, catch the Texas Legends at Comerica Center on Saturday at 7:30 pm. Legends games are always family-friendly, affordable, and bonus - easier to manage logistically than heading downtown for a Mavs game.

🤠 Speaking of our local NBA team, the Dallas Mavericks want a new facility. The NBA team’s lease at the American Airlines Center expires in 2031, prompting discussions about “should we stay or should we go now” (nod to The Clash, obviously). Irving has been on the table for reasons relating to money and the primary fan base. If they decide to remain in Dallas proper, however, several sites are being considered, including a new arena in the Design District or a possible location near the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center. Also on the table is the Lew Sterrett Justice Center near Commerce and Riverfront - also known as the Dallas County Jail - which would be torn down and moved elsewhere. Until the 2031 lease expires, the Mavs will continue to make improvements to the American Airlines Center.

(a.k.a. your next dream home.)

A handful of 🔥hot headlines🔥 and odd stories from elsewhere.

  • Snow White fans are sharing strong reactions to the Disney remake. Why? They don’t appreciate the creative liberties that alter the ending. SPOILER ALERT: Rachel Zegler, who portrays Snow White in the film says, “…it’s no longer 1937 … she’s not going to be saved by the prince, and she’s not going to be dreaming about true love; she’s going to be dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be and that her late father told her that she could be if she was fearless, fair, brave and true.”

  • TikTok has removed the “chubby filter,” which altered images to make the bodies of people in them look larger following backlash towards people sharing videos using it. Hmm…can’t imagine why anyone was offended.
